Clinical Professor in Infectious Diseases

Your work tasks
As a Clinical Professor, you will share responsibility for developing the department’s research and teaching environment and contribute to implementing the faculty’s overall strategy. You are expected to contribute to the development of the academic field, including highly specialized functions.
In addition to clinical duties, the position includes initiating, planning, and managing research activities. You will strengthen and develop research within the specialty through participation in local, national, and international research forums, networks, and scientific societies. Furthermore, you are expected to maintain and further develop high academic and didactic standards in undergraduate medical education across the region. Undergraduate teaching, particularly within the medical master’s programme, is conducted in collaboration with the department’s clinical associate professors.
Approximately half of your working hours will be dedicated to university-related tasks, including recruitment, acquisition of research funding, supervision of students and PhD candidates, academic assessments, and participation in research-strategic committees and forums.
Your competencies
You are specialist-certified in infectious disease with a research profile focused on clinical infectious disease having research experience within clinical epidemiology, randomised clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, pharmaco-kinetic models.
Emphasis is placed on original scientific production, experience with research leadership, success in attracting external funding, and experience in building and developing research strategies and communities. In addition, you are expected to have solid pedagogical and didactic qualifications for teaching medical students, as well as experience as principal supervisor for PhD candidates.

Who we are
The Department of Clinical Medicine provides research-based teaching across all disciplines of the medical degree programme and conducts research within the clinical specialties.
The department collaborates closely with hospitals in the North Denmark Region and general practice in both teaching and research. Medical students receive instruction at several hospital sites and in general practice throughout the region.
The department is affiliated with approximately 40 research units, each representing a specific medical specialty. In addition, the department is also associated with several other research units and centres. The majority of the department’s staff hold concurrent clinical positions alongside their academic appointments.

The Department of Infectious Diseases, Aalborg University Hospital, is a clinically active and academically engaged unit providing specialist care across the full spectrum of infectious disease, including life-threatening bacterial infections (e.g. meningitis, bacteraemia, sepsis), severe viral infections (e.g. influenza, COVID-19), immunodeficiency disorders, HIV/AIDS, tropical diseases, infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant organisms, and fever of unknown origin.
The department operates 13 inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic, a day-care unit, an Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) programme, and an Antimicrobial Stewardship function. The medical staff comprises 20 physicians, of whom 12 are specialist-certified consultants in infectious diseases. On-call responsibilities can be incorporated into the position by agreement.
The department hosts an active and multidisciplinary research group with a broad portfolio spanning neurological infections, COVID-19, vaccine efficacy, antimicrobial resistance, OPAT, bacteraemia, HIV, hepatitis, enteric pathogens, and the intestinal microbiota. The group has established competencies across clinical database studies and epidemiology, interventional clinical trials, laboratory-based analyses, and cell and animal model systems. Several PhD candidates and medical students are affiliated with the group, reflecting a strong commitment to research training and academic mentorship.
The incoming professor will join a department that values the integration of clinical excellence and scientific inquiry and will have the opportunity to contribute to and further develop this research environment in close collaboration with existing faculty and affiliated investigators.

Salary and terms of employment
The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish).
There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
Employment as a consultant (overlæge) follows the applicable collective agreement between Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists. The professorship includes an annual honorarium of DKK 172,700 (March 2012 level).
