Part of the solution

It has existed longer than any of us. It can be turned into homes, hospitals, and high-rise buildings. It makes it possible for us to cross water with ease through tunnels and bridges. It is the foundation of amazing constructions from wind turbines to opera houses. We couldn’t build any of this without it; one of the strongest building materials in the world – cement. That’s what we produce at Aalborg Portland.

But as the world has changed, so have the requirements for how we build. Urbanisation and climate change are all-encompassing challenges that need to be solved across industries. We have the determination and knowledge to drive that change for cement production and bring forward more sustainable solutions. Because the solution is not to stop building. The solution is to create sustainable building materials.

Cement is not just cement. From our base in the north of Denmark, we have direct access to the local raw materials which allows us to produce cement of high strength and quality. It is where we innovate and develop the products that set the standard for our entire industry and the knowledge which we transfer worldwide. We are aware of the impact our production has on our surroundings and how we can make a positive difference. We understand the challenges our planet is facing – and we will continue to use our experience and expertise to find solutions: to develop more energy efficient processes, to launch products with less climate impact, and to install technologies that reduce our footprint. And by doing so, we assist Denmark and our customers in reaching their ambitious climate targets.

Defining new standards for an entire industry is only possible because of our people. We are more than 850 Danes plus more than 2,200 international colleagues who every day strive to offer the next generation of cement to our customers. We have an international outlook and yet we are deeply integrated into our local community, which has provided us with a loyal workforce for generations and a solid bond with our suppliers, neighbours, businesses and authorities. We trust, respect and depend on each other and we share the ambition to continuously improve the way we work – just as we have done for the past 135 years and will keep doing.

We have the ability to drive the change and transform our industry – and at the same time deliver the largest single contribution to Danish industrial CO2 reduction. We are part of the solution.

Do you want to be a part of the largest green transition in Denmark's history?

Aalborg Portland employs approximately 400 employees, and each year we produce around 2.3 million tons of cement. One of our kilns - kiln 87 - produces up to 5,000 tons of cement clinker per day with combustion temperatures of up to 1500 degrees. Our famous excavators dig up to 1,600 tons of limestone per hour next to our 40-meter-deep chalk lake. The cement plant also supplies surplus heat to around 30,000 households in Aalborg.

We give high priority to apprentices and students and are proud to constantly employ more than 20 apprentices. Aalborg Portland is known as the process company in Denmark that has the highest proportion of apprentices in relation to the number of employees. Our committed apprentices range widely from apprentice electricians and blacksmiths to process operator trainees and industrial technicians, and we see these talents as a vital source of filling permanent positions.

In our efforts to create and shape the talents of the future, we have for several years practiced graduate programs which, through rotations, provide a unique knowledge of various functions and work processes across the organization. Because of the extensive knowledge the graduates’ gain, they will be assigned an important role in our organization - both now and in the future.
