Senior Associate

Climate tech finance – First-of-a-kind projects in the Nordics

Location: Copenhagen Hybrid (home and at main office in central Copenhagen) Occasional travel to be expected
Starting date: Jan 2027 or as soon as possible
Contract: 12 months contract with the possibility of extension
Working language: Danish and English
Responsible Director: Signe Fosgaard, Director of GFI Denmark

About the project

The project aims to create designs and structures that can unlock capital for first-of-a-kind (FOAK) cleantech projects in the Nordics and address the climate-tech finance gap. By helping these technologies reach commercial scale, the project will support the green transition and strengthen economic resilience, energy security and strategic independence.

Building on landscaping work undertaken in 2025, the project will explore how public and concessional capital can mobilise private investment as cleantech companies move towards commercial-scale production. Drawing inspiration from emerging-market finance vehicles, it will prioritise sectors aligned with industrial policy, outline financing structures and support mechanisms, engage public capital providers, and recommend potential implementation partners.

The project will take the Danish market as its starting point, with broader Nordic relevance and applicability. All findings will be made publicly available to benefit the wider market and help advance the global green transition.

About the GFI

Established in 2019, the Green Finance Institute (GFI) is an independent advisor to governments and investors. It is at the forefront of shaping how finance can be used to facilitate a real economy transition, by designing, testing, and scaling financial solutions that enable capital to flow where it can deliver the greatest impact in the real economy.

The GFI delivers positive outcomes for climate and nature by aligning policy, capital and pipeline development. As a commercially focused philanthropic organisation working with governments and partnering with financial institutions, corporates, NGOs, policymakers, academics and civil society experts, the GFI has mobilised over £80bn in committed capital to date.

The GFI is headquartered in London and has a presence in eight countries including Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Indonesia, the Philippines, Scotland, South Africa and Spain, and its missions work across the built environment, carbon dioxide removals, industrial decarbonisation, energy, transportation and nature.

What we offer

This role is in the Danish office of GFI. We are a growing, ambitious, and collaborative team with a strong focus on real economy outcomes.

The Danish office has three areas of focus namely the built environment, cleantech investments and nature finance working at the intersection of finance, policy and industry.

Our main office is at the SEB building in Copenhagen, but you will also have access to our community working space at Thoravej 29 where you will have the opportunity to learn about the exciting work done by other value driven organisations.

We see performance and wellbeing as closely linked and support your growth through mentoring, feedback, and participation in international initiatives.

Your key responsibilities

Lead execution of the project’s six-step delivery plan:

Key deliverables

Develop their understanding of the proposed designs and explore their appetite and potential roles in supporting them.
  • Support steering group: The project steering group bring together financiers, public-sector representatives and industry actors to guide the work and help shape proposed financing solutions. Key deliverables include prepare and facilitate approximately monthly meetings over 12 months, capturing input and coordinating follow-up.
  • Prioritise sectors: Assess relevant cleantech sectors in terms of technology maturity, commercial potential, capital intensity and risk-return profiles. Identify priority sectors aligned with industrial policy and public capital mandates.
  • Outline financing structures: Develop one or more proposed structures, vehicles, programmes or platforms that place public capital at the core and are designed to crowd in private investment. Set out risk-return options suited to different capital providers and mandates.
  • Design a support package: Assess how public, private and philanthropic capital can support FOAK deployment through risk-sharing and financing tools, including contingent debt facilities, technology performance insurance, guarantees, first-loss capital and project finance, alongside revenue-certainty mechanisms such as demand aggregation, public procurement, contracts for difference, price-stability mechanisms and offtake backstops.
  • Recommend implementation partners: Identify and assess potential partners that could host or operate a proposed vehicle and outline practical next steps towards implementation.

You will manage day-to-day delivery, maintain the project plan and coordinate contributions from stakeholders and specialist advisers. Translate technical, financial and policy analysis into clear, actionable recommendations, with strong attention to detail and ownership of milestones and follow-through.

A central part of the role will be to map and engage public institutions, investors, cleantech companies and industry actors. Prepare and facilitate bilateral discussions and steering-group meetings, bringing together different perspectives to test and refine proposals for the Danish market and their broader Nordic applicability.

Synthesise lessons from international financing initiatives, particularly emerging-market vehicles that use public and concessional capital to mobilise private investment, and assess their relevance to emerging climate technologies. Prepare publicly available findings and recommendations setting out proposed designs, support mechanisms, potential implementation partners and next steps.
