Student Developer Position / SDU Center for Industriel Software (Sønderborg)

Project: Programming with and without AI – a balanced approach

We are launching a project to rethink how programming is taught in the age of AI. Recent trends show that students increasingly rely on AI tools for code completion and generation, which risks lowering their fundamental programming skills. Our goal is to find a balanced approach, ensuring students can program effectively both with and without AI support. As part of this project, we will:

  • Develop teaching material for introductory programming and software engineering that highlights the trade-offs of AI use (efficiency vs. code quality, maintainability, and learning outcomes).

  • Explore and prototype AI-aware programming editors/platforms that guide students toward responsible use of AI in coding tasks.

  • Produce awareness-building material that helps students understand when AI accelerates progress and when it undermines learning or code quality.

The project will deliver reusable teaching resources, experimental tooling prototypes, and other material to support universities in integrating AI responsibly into programming education.

Requirements: The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Research skills: ability to efficiently collect, analyze, and synthesize information from academic, non-academic and technical sources.

  • Programming skills: solid programming skills in C# (other languages are nice to have).

  • AI tooling knowledge: good understanding of AI code completion/generation, IDE editors, and how these tools impact development workflows.

  • Analytical mindset: able to critically evaluate information and synthesize it analytically.

  • Documentation skills: ability to document findings clearly and contribute to teaching material development.

  • Collaboration: The student is expected to work closely with Adam Alami, Aslak Johanson, and another student (one based in Odense and one in Sønderborg). The student is also expected to collaborate with other researchers and students from other participating Danish universities.

  • It is an advantage if you are a student at Campus Sønderborg

The position is 8–14 hours per week, with possibility to work 14 hours per week during non-teaching and exam-free periods (e.g., July). The project runs until mid-2027.

To apply, please submit a maximum one-page motivation letter addressing your motivation for the project and how you meet some of the requirements listed above. Submit a single PDF (2 pages); the second page must include your academic transcript (a student's complete academic history, detailing courses taken, and grades received). AI-generated text is not allowed in the writing of the motivation letter. If any AI-generated content is suspected or detected in the application, it will result in automatic dismissal of your application.
