Associate Professor in Play Design
At Kolding School of Design, research activities are organized into three laboratories: Lab for Sustainability and Design, Lab for Play Design, and Lab for Social Design. The present position is linked to the Lab for Play Design.
Design research, artistic development work and knowledge from practice jointly form the knowledge base for our educations including continuous education. Generating new knowledge by experimenting through doing and making is in the center of our work. We will therefore prioritize candidates who can document experiences with research through design / practice-based design research / experimental design research.
The position
The field of play design is an emerging field of research. The ideal applicant must have a relevant background in design. It is highly valued that the applicant has a strong research field of play and children, aiming at understanding designing play and play materialities.
The Lab for Play Design is internationally oriented in terms of both research and teaching. With many international MA students and colleagues, the associated professorship is situated within a multidisciplinary environment at the Design School Kolding.
Research
We are looking for an applicant with a research profile that is strongly situated within the field of play design.
Applicants with a strong profile within co-design are of interests to qualify and develop the methodological and theoretical development in Lab for Play Design.
The ideal applicant must be experienced in collaborating with other researchers, both when it comes to collaborative data analysis and collaborative research seminars.
The applicant must be able to document varied research production independently and collaboratively at a high international level, as well as research contributions to theoretical, methodological, and thematic development in the field of play design.
The applicant must have experience with different kinds of project management and be able to lead national and/or international research funding.
Teaching profile:
The applicant must be prepared to teach and supervise in both Danish and English at both Bachelor, Master's and PhD level within the following themes:
- Design diciplines (textile design, communication design, industrial design, fashion design and industrial design).
- Qualitative research methodology
- Co-design
- Design methodologies
- Sensory practices and materialities
- Play and playful practices
It is expected that an associate professor will contribute to talent development, supervise MA-students and PhD students and develop PhD courses and Master classes.
Qualifications:
Applicants for the associate professorship must have a PhD in the field of design, with an emphasis on play, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an associate professorship. The applicants must be able to document:
- A research profile in design with a specific profile within play design and play materialities
- An internationally oriented research profile
- A strong, relevant international publication profile
- Participation in national and international research networks
- Participation in collective research projects
- Teaching experience in areas of relevance to play design.
- Experience of attracting external research funding
- Experience of supervising student projects
- Interest in researcher talent development.
Applicants will be expected to contribute to the development of the academic environment of Kolding School of Design and a strong interest in collaborative working relationships, both among colleagues with background in design and other fields
Application and process:
As a school we emphasize a strong synergy between research and teaching through research-based teaching and teaching-based research. All applicants must document that they hold a PhD degree and provide evidence of both research and teaching experiences relevant to the position. In the application you shall describe how your research and teaching are relevant for both general design field and the Design for Play field. Additionally, we would like you to explain how you can contribute to one or more of the BA specializations mentioned above. A strong theoretical foundation and teaching portfolio will be valued.

- A motivation letter of a maximum of 3 pages.
- A detailed CV
- Degree certificates (including PhD-diploma).
- A maximum of five peer-reviewed publications.
- A complete and numbered list of published publications with clear indications of which have been peer reviewed.
- A teaching portfolio detailing the candidate’s prior teaching experience, teaching skills, and teaching philosophy. In addition, a list with suggestions of courses or topics one could offer in relation to one or more of the BA-programs and the MA Design for Play program.
- A research plan detailing the candidate’s ideas and plans for future research work including how it contributes to the research in Lab Design for Play.

We expect the successful applicant to start January 2026.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
