Clinical position as senior consultant combined with a clinical research associate professorship in Urology

A clinical position as senior consultant with a focus on urothelial cancer at the Department of Urology at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment as soon as possible.

The position as senior consultant is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical research associate professor in Urology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Urology, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

As a clinical research associate professor at Zealand University Hospital, you become part of a fellowship of professors and other researchers who work to bring research in the forefront for novel treatments to benefit the patients we serve.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the clinical research associate professorship and the clinical position.

The Department

Urology Department, Zealand University Hospital, handles the comprehensive urological function in Region Zealand at the sites in Roskilde and Næstved.

The department at the Næstved site primarily performs basic urology in a day surgery setup.

The department at the Roskilde site receives all acute urology cases in Region Zealand and, in addition to basic urology in Region Zealand, handles the regional urological functions: kidney surgery, prostate surgery, and advanced stone surgery, including PNL, RIRS, and ESWL, as well as pediatric urology. Additionally, it provides diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with urological cancers.

The Urology Department in Roskilde has 32 beds distributed across two wards.

The Urology Department has 16 operating tables weekly in the central operating theater in Roskilde and 13 operating tables weekly in Næstved. Additionally, outpatient surgery is performed in the outpatient clinic in Roskilde.

The department has outpatient facilities with a total of 23 weekly examination/treatment rooms for specialists in Roskilde. In Næstved, there are 17 weekly examination/treatment rooms. At the Roskilde site, a surgical room has been established for operations under local anesthesia, including Botox injections, peno-scrotal disorders, and, as a new addition, laser treatment of benign bladder papilloma recurrences.

The department has modern endourological equipment, including Holmium laser, SOLTIVE laser, TUMT, and advanced equipment for percutaneous kidney stone treatment and laparoscopic urology. Since autumn 2012, the department at the Roskilde site has performed robot-assisted urinary tract surgery, including kidney surgery and radical prostatectomy.

Region Zealand has a population of approximately 840,000 citizens who are under the care of four hospital units. Zealand University Hospital is one of these units with a division in Roskilde, Køge and Nykøbing Sjælland. In 2027, Zealand University Hospital will be housed in new buildings and will be the main regional hospital with a centralization of nearly all medical specialties and a total of 835 beds.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department:

The department is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with urological diseases. Surgical treatments play an important role in the Department, where we perform from minor procedures in the outpatient clinic under local anaesthesia to major robotic surgery. This position is focused on bladder cancer and Upper Tract Urothelial Cancer. Clinical work includes advanced diagnostic and endoscopic treatments, such as transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURB), nephroureteroscopies, outpatient TULA​. Consultations at the outpatient clinic and on calls are also part of the job. Clinical supervision of urology residents is an important role that is expected from the candidate.

The candidate is expected to lead the urothelial cancer team. We also expect the candidate to lead the transition from cystoscopies to biomarkers in the follow-up of high-risk NMIBC. The Department of Urology at Zealand University Hospital is leading a multidisciplinary Awareness Campaign on Bladder Cancer (@BevarBlæren), bringing knowledge and awareness about the disease, symptoms and prevention to schools in the region, which is also to be led by the candidate.

Research and teaching.

The appointed clinical research associate professor is expected to lead and develop clinical research with a specific focus on urothelial cancer both in the bladder and the upper urinary tract. This includes:

  • Advancing innovative treatment approaches such as electroporation-based therapy and laser treatments for bladder cancer.
  • Conducting clinical and translational research in both non-muscle invasive and muscle-invasive bladder cancer, including diagnostic strategies, surgical interventions.
  • Lead the multinational Nordic collaborative work on UTUC.
  • Taking the lead in establishing collaborative research initiatives within the hospital, across departments, and internationally.
  • Supervising PhD students, postdocs, and junior researchers, and contributing to a strong academic environment at Zealand University Hospital.
  • Support research in other topics in the Department.

In terms of teaching, the appointee is expected to:

  • Coordinate medical students’ internship at the Department of Urology and be the connection between the University of Copenhagen and the Department of Urology.
  • Play a key role in research-based teaching in urology at the University of Copenhagen.
  • Develop and deliver state-of-the-art and innovative teaching programs for medical students.
  • Contribute to the continuing education and training of junior doctors and clinical staff.

The clinical research associate professor is expected to act as a visible academic leader, fostering an environment of excellence in both clinical practice and academic inquiry​.

Qualifications:

For the position as consultant:

  • Certified Urologist.
  • PhD degree
  • Proven experience in treating urothelial cancer
  • Experience with laser techniques
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Broad international network

For the position as researcher:

  • PhD degree
  • Experience with electroporation-based technologies for the treatment of cancers
  • Proven teaching experience.
  • Proven leadership skills
  • To have an ample international network

Conditions:

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the clinical research associate professorship) and to the hospital (the clinical position) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the clinical research associate professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants or staff specialists at Zealand University Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant or staff specialist are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical research associate professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the Head of Department of Urology, Zealand University Hospital.
