For English see below.

The Royal Danish Collection is seeking a highly qualified Head of Conservation and Collections Management

Are you an experienced conservator with the ability to lead a specialist professional team? Would you like to lead a team of 6 conservators and set the direction for the conservation of some of Denmark’s most significant cultural and historical artefacts?

As Head of Conservation and Collections Management, you will be responsible for a department characterized by a high level of professional expertise and of central importance to the work of The Royal Danish Collection. You will lead and develop a team of 6 conservators, ensure the day-to-day management and conservation of the collections, and drive forward key strategic projects that will shape the future of collections management and conservation work for the organization.

The department plays a central role in The Royal Danish Collection’s current and future plans, including the establishment of new storage and conservation facilities and the Kingdom’s Treasury at Rosenborg Castle. As Head, you will need to strike a balance between day-to-day operations, professional development of the team, and the long-term ambitions for the collection.

Your principal workplace is likely to be Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, but you will need to work regularly at The Royal Danish Collection’s other locations.

Your role

You will be a key professional leader within The Royal Danish Collection and an important collaborator for other departments within the organization. At the same time, you will play a vital role in several of The Royal Danish Collection’s strategic development projects, including the establishment of new storage and conservation facilities.

You will report to the Head of Collections, Research and Exhibitions and will be responsible for setting the direction for the department, striking a balance between day-to-day care of the collection and long-term planning. In particular, you will ensure that the department contributes effectively to the objectives of The Royal Danish Collection’s 2030 strategy, including the realization of ‘The Kingdom’s Treasury’: the once-in-a-generation development of a new treasury at Rosenborg Castle.

Your responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic direction, operational management and future development of the Conservation and Collections Management department, in alignment with organizational goals and strategy.
  • Manage the department’s resources to ensure a balance between ongoing care of the collections and strategic project work.
  • Support and develop staff in the department, through mentoring, feedback and professional dialogue.
  • Play a key role in the establishment of new storage and conservation facilities for The Royal Danish Collection, and lead the process of moving parts of the collection to the new facility.
  • Lead the organization’s approach to preventive conservation, including integrated pest management and risk management.
  • Undertake conservation treatment and research in an area of specialist expertise relevant to The Royal Danish Collection’s holdings, e.g. furniture, textiles or metals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver the organization’s strategic projects, exhibitions and permanent reinterpretation projects.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key external partners and stakeholders, including the Agency for Palaces and Cultural Heritage.

The leadership role

You are a visible and approachable leader who combines a high level of professional expertise with an eye for people, their professional development and the organization. You build trust, set a clear direction and allow scope for your staff’s expertise and responsibility.

As a leader, you are able to translate complex professional issues into clear priorities, and collaborate effectively across disciplines. At the same time, you are firmly grounded in your professional expertise as a conservator, and keep abreast of the most recent developments in conservation and collections management.

We expect you to:

  • Have a relevant qualification in a conservation discipline.
  • Have significant experience of working with historical collections.
  • Thrive in an interdisciplinary environment, able to build good relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Have management experience or the willingness to take on this role.
  • Be able to provide direction, foster engagement and drive professional development within a team of specialists.
  • Be able to balance strategic development with day-to-day operations.

Who are you?

We are looking for a respected and actively practicing conservator with significant experience in conservation practice and research. Experience of working in historic buildings is desirable, but not a requirement.

You are a specialist conservator in a field directly relevant to The Royal Danish Collection, such as textiles, furniture, metals, paintings, books or paper.

You will combine team leadership with active conservation work within your specific area of expertise. In this role, you will contribute up-to-date knowledge of conservation ethics, expertise in integrated pest management (IPM) and a commitment to striking a balance between the conservation needs of the collection and The Royal Danish Collection’s ambitions to make the collection accessible to visitors, researchers and the general public.

We offer

We offer a key leadership role within an organization with an exceptional collection and the opportunity to shape both the day-to-day and long-term development of our work in conservation and collections management.

You will have the opportunity to combine leadership, professional practice and strategic development, while also playing a key role in establishing new facilities for The Royal Danish Collection.

Please send a brief cover letter and CV as soon as possible, and at the latest by Sunday 25 October 2026.
