Postdoctoral fellowship

Research unit for General Practice Copenhagen a part of Center of General Practice University of Copenhagen

We are offering a postdoctoral fellowship in relational continuity and access to general practice commencing January 1st 2026 or as soon as possible.

Project description

Patients value both rapid help in general practice and a trusted doctor who knows them well. Yet general practice is changing: clinics are becoming larger, more staff are involved in care, and shortages of general practitioners mean patients may not always see their usual doctor.

To improve access, policymakers have introduced tools such as email consultations, video consultations, and “Tid-Samme-Dag.” While these initiatives improve access, they risk weakening the personal relationships.

This project examines how clinics balance continuity—seeing the same doctor over time—with access—ensuring contact, and how continuity and access are perceived by general practice professionals and patients. The project will cover a range of clinics in Region Zealand, from small solo practices to large and regional centers. Using ethnographic methods such as observations and interviews with doctors, staff, and patients, the candidate will explore daily routines, potential conflicts between access and relational continuity, and the role of digital tools in relation to managing continuity and access.

Our group and research

The postdoctoral fellow will be the principal investigator. Other members of the research group are

  • Associate Professor Ann Dorrit Guassora, Center for Research and Education in General Practice, Department of Public Health, E-mail guassora@sund.ku.dk, Direct Phone: 35327157.
  • Associate Professor Elisabeth Assing Hvidt, Department of Public Health, Research Unit of General Practice, University of Southern Denmark, E-mail ehvidt@health.sdu.dk
  • Thomas Drivsholm (TD) who has 25 years of experience working at the intersection of clinical practice, research, and quality development and has successfully implemented “Tid-Samme-Dag” in his practice and evaluated it in a research project
  • Tina Drud Due (TDD) who has extensive experience in qualitative health services research, particularly in general practice. TDD has been the lead Danish representative in a recent collaboration with the Universities of Oxford and Warwick, studying access to general practice in the UK and Denmark.

As a postdoctoral fellow you will also be part of the Consultation research group at Center for Research and Education in General Practice. The group supports the development of consultation skills. We strive to do this in a manner that accommodates diversity of patients and that cultivates understanding. Our members are both doctors, social scientists and researchers from the humanities and includes a PhD student investigating patients’ perspectives on continuity.
