Optical communications is the backbone of our information society; however currently optical fiber transmission is approaching the capacity limit.
This project aims to explore novel way using AlGaAs photonic chips for optical communications at a new wavelength region of 2 um, which is part of Villum young investigator program of energy-efficient optical communications at 2 micron beyond capacity crunch (2MAC).
The AlGaAs-on-insulator (AlGaAsOI) nano-waveguide, where a thin AlGaAs layer on top of a low index insulator layer resides on a semiconductor substrate, has recently emerged as an ultra-efficient nonlinear platform, since the AlGaAsOI nano-waveguide combines high intrinsic material nonlinearity with the large index contrast between AlGaAs and silica cladding.

DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. The groups offering the position recently showed the world's most efficient nonlinear integrated photonics platform by using AlGaAs on insulator which was presented as post-deadline papers at leading conferences (Pu et al. OFC & CLEO US 2015).
This material is two-photon absorption free, but for very high powers three-photon absorption will lower the performance of the platform, and we are also looking into other materials.
We are now seeking a new PhD student for the team who will further optimize and functionalize the platforms by processing new designs including contacting schemes for tuning.

The Research will be carried out within the centre of excellence: "Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications", (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Starting date in the fall 2017.
The goal of the PhD project is to do research on the impact of noise in optical signal processing using nonlinear integrated circuits and investigate the tradeoffs between possible nonlinear materials.

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position in NanoBiophotonics for Light Robotics. The PhD project is part of the interdisciplinary research activities in the new Center for Biopharmaceuticals and Biobarriers in Drug Delivery funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme for oral drug delivery of biopharmaceuticals.
This PhD project will be hosted at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) but will involve close collaboration with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and Univ. British Columbia, Vancouver Canada.
The PhD project, in collaboration with biomedical science experts, will develop new light robotic systems and methods tailored for unprecedented control and precision in the study of biological mechanisms in drug delivery of biopharmaceutical through biobarriers.

A unique research opportunity is available at the Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). We are offering a PhD position to work on a project on controlling the emission and spins of solid state emitters towards the grand aim of constructing a quantum network.
The project will be hosted in the section for Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) at DTU Physics and part of a newly funded large-scale research project. We are working closely together with international partners, where external research stays can be arranged. In QPIT we conduct widely recognized research within a range of diverse topics such as continuous-variable quantum information processing, quantum enhanced sensing, and engineering of solid state quantum systems.

PhD scholarships in electrical thunderstorm processes.
The Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics Section at DTU Space leads the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) for the International Space Station with launch in winter 2017/2018. ASIM will measure Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs), Sprites, Jets and Gigantic Jets (the Transient Luminous Emissions, TLEs) and lightning.
Scientists and engineers in the section have supported the development of the ASIM instruments, are fielding instruments on the ground for optical observations of discharges above thunderstorms, and develop simulation tools for atmospheric electric discharges.
The section coordinates the EU H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Project SAINT (Science and Innovation with Thunderstorms) of 15 Ph.D. students and 19 partners.
