The Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, invites applications for a three-year position as Assistant Professor. We seek an Assistant Professor to join a new team of researchers focused on marine biodiversity, conservation, resilience, and ecosystem services. The position will be affiliated both at Department of Biology, and Ecology group.

In this role, you will contribute significantly to the mapping, assessment and quantification of ecosystem services, with a distinct focus on biodiversity-related ecosystem services, management, governance, and co-production of knowledge through deep expert- and stakeholder engagement. Collaboratively, you will be expected to engage in fieldwork, addressing key research questions related to ecosystem services in coastal ecosystems such as beaches, seagrasses, intertidal flats and coastal lagoons. Your efforts will extend to building comprehensive spatial mapping of ecosystem services, facilitating stakeholder workshops aimed at developing, testing, and validating socio-ecological tools, with the goal of improving conservation and restoration for a resilient future.

As part of the Horizon Europe-funded “REWRITE: Rewilding and Restoration of Intertidal Sediment Ecosystems for Carbon Sequestration, Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity Support” project, you will work closely with Associated Professor Cintia O. Quintana, along with other renowned researchers at the Department and within the REWRITE project consortium.

Your role
As the Assistant Professor, you will focus on marine conservation and restoration challenges in Europe, proposing innovative approaches that align with the EU Biodiversity Strategy, EU Restoration Law, EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, and national initiatives. Your responsibilities will include supporting the testing and validation of socio-ecological and environmental tools in Denmark and abroad. Specifically, you will concentrate on gathering data associated with these tools and investigating environmental challenges linked to the balance between human activities’ use and conservation and/or restoration practices.

Candidate Profile
The candidate should have a PhD in biology, ecology, environmental/resource Economics or similar. Experience with biodiversity topics, coastal habitats, or ecosystem service assessments is highly desirable. Proficiencies in areas like biodiversity of flora and fauna, ecosystems ecology, environmental sociology, stakeholder engagement and integration, R-coding, GIS, and mapping software will be beneficial. More specifically, we welcome a candidate with experience in most of the following topics:

  • Marine ecology, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning
  • Ecosystem services and/or natural capital
  • Marine Protected Areas and Conservation
  • Stakeholder and expert engagement
  • Advanced skills on GIS, ArcGIS, Q-GIS
  • R coding and multivariate statistical analysis
  • Use of publicly available databases such as Copernicus, etc.

It is the aim of the department to conduct research of the highest international standard documented through 1) publications in internationally distinguished journals, 2) presentations at international conferences, 3) attract external funding from competitive programs, and 4) dissemination with high visibility and broad societal impact.

The applicant is expected to contribute to the teaching program at the Department in the Bachelor and Master’s programs in Biology. The research activities (and the workplace) are situated in Odense.
