A 2.5 year postdoctoral position in biomolecular simulations of membranes and membrane proteins is available at PhyLife: Physical Life Science Center (phylife.sdu.dk) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense in the group of Associate Professor Himanshu Khandelia (hkgroup.sdu.dk). The incoming candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment together with theorists and experimental scientists.

The project revolves around (1) implementing molecular simulations and developing new techniques for simulations of transmembrane proteins, particularly those involved in ion transport and (2) using machine learning methods to design protein binders. The incoming postdoc will have the opportunity to mould the project to a significant degree.

The candidate should have a good knowledge of statistical mechanics, good English communication skills and experience with all-atom or coarse-grained molecular simulations. The candidate should be comfortable with programming and the Linux programming environment. Candidates with background in Physics, Physical Chemistry and Engineering are desirable. Candidates with only prior experience in empirical methods like docking or structural bioinformatics are not encouraged to apply. The successful candidate(s) will have access to state-of-the-art supercomputing resources in Denmark and Europe.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and is located in Odense. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is a department focused on basic research. We are happy to move beyond traditional disciplines and work to develop new technologies and sciences across physics, chemistry, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science and biology. The Department’s research thus contributes to new knowledge and solutions with applications in the areas of climate, environment, energy and health.

The department handles research in chemistry, physics and pharmacy along with several interdisciplinary areas, and also houses several major research centres. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is responsible for the educations in chemistry, medicinal chemistry and physics, as well as the bachelor’s education in pharmacy.
