We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a two-year position starting September 1st 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter to develop methods for population genetic analyses of sedimentary DNA, including demographic analyses and analyses of variants under natural selection.

Information on the department can be found at https://globe.ku.dk.

Our research
We are a highly interdisciplinary research group focusing on sequencing and analyzing ancient environmental DNA (aeDNA). Our large field and laboratory team samples cores drilled from ice or soil. Using state-of-the-art sequencing technologies, we sequence DNA of the samples in order to reconstruct the species distribution in past environments. The objective of the research is to understand ecological and evolutionary processes, including the consequences of climate change. The research brings together a diverse team of researchers with backgrounds in geology, genetics, ecology, computer science, statistics, and more.

Your job
You will join a multi-disciplinary research team working on developing, implementing and executing bioinformatical methods and pipelines for analyses of sedimentary DNA, i.e. DNA that has been obtained through shotgun sequencing of environmental samples. Your task will be to develop population genetic methods for data analyses that can accommodate the complex nature of the data and will enable analyses of population size changes, gene-flow among locations, and selection acting on specific variants.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or related field.
  • You are highly experienced in software development for statistical analyses of genetic data.
  • You have an active interest in applications in population genetics, evolution, and ecology.
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams.
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken.
Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience in a software development in low-level languages such as C/C++/Rust.
  • Demonstrated active knowledge of advanced computational and numerical methods commonly applied in statistics.
  • Experience in the development of statistical methods for analyses of population genetic data.
  • Experience in science communications, including writing of peer reviewed papers for biological, statistical, or computer science journals and/or conference proceedings.
