Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a PhD scholarship funded and under the auspices of the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research with a focus on Chinese foreign direct investment and public policy in a changing Europe. The scholarship will be based at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB).

The envisaged starting date of the position is October 1, 2025.

EGB is a multidisciplinary department that conducts high-quality research in the fields of international business and political science / analysis that has direct relevance to business, decision-makers and the broader public whilst also addressing contemporary societal challenges.

The department’s PhD fellows will gain much from our research seminars and other activities. The three-year PhD programme at CBS gives candidates the opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of CBS faculty, supported by research-related PhD courses. The project

Applicants are invited to submit plans for potential PhD projects. These plans should incorporate specific research questions that address the changing character of Chinese investment in Europe within the overall context of the shifts taking place in both China and Europe. Such questions could consider economic trends and processes of policy developments within China and the ways in which the changes wrought across Europe from the time of the “Great Recession” of 2008 onwards. These might include the turn to industrial policy by the EU and many member-state governments, the continuing decline of former industrial heartlands, changing ideological and partisan alignments and the uncertainties engendered by Euro crises, Brexit and the Ukraine war, the securitization of core technologies and intensified investment screening procedures as attitudes towards China have shifted, as well as direct pressures from Washington DC.

To be considered the applicant must
  • have a basic education at master's level (corresponding to the 3 + 2 Bologna process)
  • have received the grade of 10 (or equivalent) for the master's thesis according to the Danish 7-point grading scale (https://ufm.dk/en/education/the-danish-education-system/grading-system)
  • have a weighted grade point average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for the bachelor's and master's degree combined or alternatively a weighted grade point average must be at least 9.5 for the master's degree alone
  • have an educational background in the social sciences
  • have completed the master's program before starting the PhD program at CBS
  • master academic English at a high level in writing and speaking

The successful applicant for this post should furthermore have a commitment to the SDC’s goals and objectives. S/he is also likely to have (a) a background experience of, and training in, both qualitative and quantitative research techniques (b) a knowledge and understanding of different theoretical perspectives across the contemporary social sciences (c) proven competence in macro-economics, micro-economics and business studies (d) a knowledge and understanding of contemporary China and (e) a familiarity with one or more European countries and the structures of the European Union

Applicants should submit an initial research plan. This should incorporate:
  • a brief explanation of the aims of the project
  • an outline of, and rationale for, relevant research questions
  • a positioning of the project in an appropriate research field
  • a description of the research literature already published within that field
  • an outline / explanation of the theories that could be employed
  • an outline / explanation of the methods to be used and the types of data that might be
  • collected
  • an indication of the project’s potential contribution to the development of research
  • a work plan (brief) that describes the main phases in the project.

Employment and salary

A PhD scholarship runs for a period of three years and includes a requirement to contribute to SDC teaching programmes. This post incorporates a further requirement that one year should be spent in China and based at the SDC on the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Yanqihu campus. The individual who is appointed will be eligible for a double degree awarded by both CBS and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and supervision will be offered by both CBS and UCAS staff. The scholarship is a fully salaried position, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The monthly salary is currently approximately DKK 29.310,67 up to DKK 35.715,67 depending on seniority and a pension contribution totalling 18.07%. The scholarship includes tuition fees, office space, course and travel costs (according to the current CBS agreement).
Salary level and employment take place in accordance with the Ministry of Finance's agreement with the Academics' Central Organization.
