A combined position as a clinical professor (50%) and as a consultant (50%) is vacant as soon as possible at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Danish Epilepsy Centre “Filadelfia” (Dianalund, Sorø municipality), respectively.

The position is set for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The clinical professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within Neurology, and focus areas could include, yet are not limited to, epileptology, clinical genetics and clinical neurophysiology. Trans-sectional research and collaboration is expected.

Areas of responsibility

The clinical professor will be responsible for the integration of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of complex epilepsies with a particular focus on rare genetic epilepsies. The role of the clinical professor will be to strengthen the collaborations between the Department of Diagnostics and Multidisciplinary Clinical Functions, the Department of Epilepsy Genetics and Personalized Medicine, and the Paediatric and Neurology Departments at the Danish Epilepsy Centre. The clinical professor will also be responsible for developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders in the areas of epilepsy genetics, precision medicine and basic neuroscience.

Additionally, the clinical professor must teach and mentor post-docs, PhD-students, and undergraduate students, as well as maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work is part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.

Research activity, network and collaboration

The clinical professor will be expected to increase research activity at the research unit and to expand collaboration with other researchers at hospitals in the region of Southern Denmark, at SDU, the rest of Denmark and abroad.

The clinical position

The clinician will be appointed as consultant at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Danish Epilepsy Centre “Filadelfia”. The consultant must fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of a consultant in Department of Clinical Neurophysiology with expertise in the diagnosis of complex epilepsies. Trans-sectional collaboration with the clinical (adults and children) and genetics department is expected.

The Department for Clinical Neurophysiology provides diagnostic investigations for both inpatients and outpatients from all of Denmark, and Greenland (via telemedicine). The staff consists of 4 senior physicians (including a professor and an associate professor), 2 physicians, 11 neurophysiology technicians, and 3 nurses. Methods applied are standard and sleep EEG as well as short- and long-term video-EEG monitoring, high-density EEG, and other neurophysiological investigations (electromyography, nerve conduction studies, and evoked potentials). The long-term video-EEG monitoring takes place at the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (four beds) and at the children's department (ambulant EEG monitoring).

The consultant will mainly be involved in the assessment of long-term video EEG recordings for second opinions of complex epilepsies. The implementation of the neurophysiological findings into the clinical routine of the hospital is a crucial part of this position. The consultant is expected to run periodic meetings with the physicians of the clinical departments (adults, children, and clinical genetics), for the interdisciplinary discussion of particularly complex cases.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualification and must be qualified as a consultant in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. Additionally, the applicant must have substantial skills in both clinical aspects and research within the field of Clinical Genetics. The preferred candidate has demonstrated skills and scientific achievements within this area, is able to motivate, supervise and has proven research management skills, good interpersonal skills and has visions of how to further strengthen the highest specialized diagnostic functions of the Danish Epilepsy centre at the Department of Diagnostics and Multidisciplinary Clinical Functions and Department of Epilepsy Genetics and Personalized Medicine.

Danish language skills are not required initially, but must be mastered at proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

Employers

The Danish Epilepsy Centre “Filadelfia” is the only highly specialised centre for diagnosing and treating complex epilepsies in Denmark. Adults and children currently followed at the Danish Epilepsy Centre fall into the group of patients with complex drug-resistant epilepsies, typically with multiple comorbidities. The expertise of the Danish Epilepsy Centre is based on 127 years of tradition in the holistic management of epilepsy, with the highest level of medical expertise, diagnostic techniques and programs of special care for inpatients and outpatients.

The Danish Epilepsy Centre collaborates with all the main Universities in Denmark, has broad national and international connections, publishes over 100 papers yearly in peer-reviewed scientific journals and arranges international congresses and teaching courses. It also trains clinical neurophysiologists, hosts fellows from different countries worldwide and supervises postgraduate (PhD) students.

The Department of Regional Health Research supports research in relation to the person as a whole, the good life and the more common diseases, makes out a platform for scientists and educators and builds a bridge between University of Southern Denmark, The Region of Southern Denmark, Region Zealand, the hospitals in the two regions and the patient. The department focuses on the continuity of patient care across sectors, hospitals, and specialist fields.

The successful applicant for the clinical professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
