The Business IT Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of full professor. The proposed starting date is January 2025 or soon thereafter.

The IT University’s vision is to create and share knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity. The Business IT Department is committed to high quality, business-relevant educational programmes that result in employment for our competent and independent graduates and delivers relevant research-based knowledge to IT managers in the public and private sectors through our professional part-time programme.

The candidate
The ideal candidates will have a PhD and a well-developed background in the fields of anthropology and/or science and technology studies. The desirable specialization is one that can conduct ethnographically based research focusing on the valuation practices and ethics associated with data or digital technologies, and with the societal debates about (desired) technological futures.

Preferences is given to candidates who will develop a research and teaching agenda in the following areas or at their intersections:

  • Technological values and ethics. Their work should illuminate how data and technologies are valued and in turn engender new valuations. This especially relates to how aspects of norms, ethics and morality figure in the design and use of IT and/or data, including issues of agency, trust, responsibility, transparency, and accountability in different institutional and cultural settings.

  • Governance of technological change. Their work should interrogate the social license of IT - and technologies more broadly – in society, including research into IT policies, the role of the state, and the definitions and/or the roles of experts and expertise in shaping technological dimensions of compliance, interventions, expectations, and futures.

  • Development of multimodal methods and critical pedagogy. Their work should display the capacity to innovate and experiment with research methods in interdisciplinary settings for the purposes of – for example – deepening the understanding of values and ethics in data and IT, constructing meaningful interventions in valuation practices focused on technologies, and furthering public engagement – for example of marginal or disempowered voices – in societal discussions about expected, desired or ‘good’ technological futures.

The ideal applicant can work with both basic and applied research approaches and is experienced with interdisciplinary work.

Job description
The selected candidate is expected to contribute to research and education, to work strategically in research, research funding, and organization of research, and mentor junior faculty and postdocs in the applied-for area. Moreover, the candidate is expected to attract external research funding and to build external collaboration in joint research projects, also with partners outside of academia.

About the Business IT Department
Business IT is organized in three interdisciplinary research groups Technologies in Practice (TiP), Information Systems and Digital Innovation (ISDI) and REFLACT. The groups share an interest in the socio-technical fabric of digitalization and digital transformation and comprise more than 30 assistant, associate, and full professors. Research at Business IT provides basis for reflecting on how digital technologies may be used mindfully and beneficially in the private and public sector. Business IT offers a BSc in Global Business Informatics, a MSc in Digital Innovation & Management, and a professional part-time master programme in IT management. It hosts three research centers Center for Digital Welfare, Center for Climate IT and European Blockchain Center in addition to two academic labs ETHOS lab and BUILD lab.

The three research groups – TiP, REFLACT and ISDI – strive to deliver world-class research within innovation and process models, information infrastructure, digital democracy, digital change management, public digitization and cybersecurity, climate IT, as well as business and management. Being in line with the contemporary societal challenge of how data and digital technologies are increasingly prompting discussions of ethics and accountability, the Business IT Department wishes to build up expertise about the multiplicity of ways that data, digital technologies, and technological change is inscribed with value(s) through the ways they are imagined, designed, produced, governed as well as researched. This includes a focus on the democratic and societal implications and orientations toward technological futures that different data forms and technologies engender, and the multimodal methods and critical pedagogies needed to study them.
