River Stone Biotech ApS
Copenhagen

Downstream processing engineer – 12 months position

River Stone is a synthetic biology company that uses state-of-the-art biology to improve production economics and performance of pharmaceutical ingredients. Biology is nature’s way of making advanced chemistry, in some cases offering more sophisticated chemistries than classic synthetic approaches. The massive advances in synthetic biology over the past decade mean that creating and producing chemistry using biological approaches is cheaper, faster, more diverse, and more scalable than ever before. River Stone Bio is a small start-up company with a well-integrated and dynamic environment where lab work and knowledge share among the different teams (analytical, strain engineering, fermentation and downstream processing) are daily fundamental activities.

Job description

We seek a highly motivated engineer to work on the DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING for our research laboratory in Copenhagen.

In this position you will be part of River Stone’s downstream processing (DSP) team, which is responsible for developing purification methods for our biological production processes for pharmaceutical ingredients. This includes hands-on laboratory work with bench scale volumes of product, testing out new hypotheses, and optimizing existing processes. Typical DSP work would include filtrations, liquid-liquid extractions, precipitation, and crystallization. As River Stone is in the process of scaling up our processes, work may also include support of both smaller and larger scale experiments taking place at contract manufacturers.

The new DSP scientist will be responsible for setting up and running experiments, collecting, and treating data, as well as participating in experimental planning. Our DSP team is very much a hands-on team, where all team members contribute to planning experiments, setting up experiments, running them as well as interpreting data afterwards. The multidisciplinary nature of the overall project means that work requires frequent interactions with scientists from the fermentation, analytical, and other teams.

The position will give intellectual challenges and possibilities to develop your skill sets and give you the possibility of being part of commercially and scientifically exciting projects.

The position is a 12-month maternity leave position. Extension of the contract to a permanent contract cannot be promised but can also not be ruled out.

The ideal candidate possesses:

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, food process engineering, chemistry, or similar
  • Experience within down-stream purification processes, like solid-liquid separation, membrane filtration, crystallization and/or drying is a requirement
  • Flair and motivation for hands-on laboratory work
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and sometimes limited time for data analysis
