Wind Turbine Aerodynamics Specialist

Can you take aerodynamic blade design to the next level?

You may be the specialist we are looking for to advance the competences within aerodynamics in our expanding Blade Innovation team at Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group European Innovation Center (EIC) in Aarhus, Denmark.

The SEWPG European Innovation Center (part of Shanghai Electric, one of China’s largest leading manufacturing companies), assembles the best engineers in the global wind industry, working closely and effectively together on innovative R&D-projects in four main areas of wind turbine technology: Advanced load simulation, rotor blade innovation, wind systems optimization and advanced control. Therefore, you have real impact and play a central role in the development of advanced technologies and novel conceptual design which will shape the future of wind power technology in China and globally.

Your role & responsibilities

Your role is to be the technical lead and take ownership of all aspects of aerodynamic technology projects, overseeing the balance between maturity and risk. You will be responsible for conducting advanced rotor aerodynamic modeling and lead development of tool chains and methodologies within aerodynamics and blade design.

Your tasks

  • Perform wind turbine blade aerodynamic modeling and analysis.
  • Evaluate blade planform designs and revise design philosophy.
  • Model and design aerodynamic add-ons using analytical and numerical methods.
  • Research and develop tool chains and methodologies within aerodynamics and blade design
  • Utilize analytical and numerical methods for novel airfoil design.
  • Conduct CFD modelling and analysis for airfoil and blade design, including blade features.
  • Direct and execute wind tunnel tests, including pre- and post-processing of measurement data.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary teams to contribute to the advancement of aeroelastic modelling.
  • Close co-operation with the Group Leader of the Blade Innovation team and other innovation teams in the specification and development of new technical procedures/methodologies.

Your profile

You hold a Ph.D. or a MSc. degree within in Aerodynamics, Aeronautical, or Mechanical Engineering, combined with 8+ years’ experience in the wind industry with a proven track record in blade design, testing, production, and certification. You master programming using Python and preferably also Matlab. You have solid hands-on experience in BEM, 2D airfoil and aero add-ons design optimization and experience with CFD using ANSYS CFX/Fluent or OpenFOAM. Furthermore, you have experience working with aeroelastic simulation software such as HAWC2, OpenFast, Bladed or Flex5. You are familiar with SCRUM/Agile development methods and with Technology Readiness Levels.

You are ambitious and have the ability to manage and lead technology development projects. You have a high level of drive and energy to create results with a strong focus on the task and you actively drive improving processes and creatively challenge the aerodynamics of our blade design. You can create success individually and are very capable of collaborating and interacting with stakeholders and teams in blade departments (i.e. our HQ in China), hence you possess an overall understanding of main disciplines within wind turbine operation. We expect you to thrive in working in an international, multi-cultural environment and possess excellent communication skills.

We offer

A unique opportunity to be part of our European Innovation Center, building a center of advanced technologies and rich design in a fast-paced blooming renewable energy sector while working with the best industry specialists in an informal working environment encouraging innovation.
