Greenland Specialist (Greenland Political/Economic Specialist)

Do you want to work in Nuuk as a key facilitator of U.S. political, economic, commercial and public diplomacy in Greenland?

The U.S. Mission in Copenhagen, Denmark is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Greenland Specialist, based out of Nuuk.

The position is full-time 40 hours per week.

You will be a member of the Embassy’s Political and Economic Section and cooperate extensively with the Public Affairs Section. As you will work primarily from Nuuk while most of your colleagues are in Copenhagen, it is important that you can function independently as a contributing team player. Being comfortable with, and adaptable to, change is important.

The position offers you the opportunity to support U.S. diplomacy in Greenland. You will have the opportunity to network with colleagues in the United States and other embassies throughout Scandinavia and Europe. You will be expected to travel throughout Greenland in support of visiting officials and to travel occasionally to Copenhagen for meetings and consultations with Embassy colleagues.

Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Basic Function of Position:  Provides advice, research, and reporting on the full range of Greenlandic political, economic, cultural and social issues, analyzing their impact on U.S. priorities and interests and predicting future trends.  Establishes and cultivates high-level contacts across all sectors of Greenlandic society; assists in implementing Embassy cultural programs and in identifying participants for academic, professional and private sector exchanges.  Supports travel by U.S. officials and officers within Greenland and facilitates their relationships with Greenlandic officials and the public. Provides translation and interpretation services to/from Greenlandic, Danish, and English as required.

Develops and maintains an extensive number of high-level contacts across all parts of the Greenlandic government, business community, and civil society (including political parties, educational institutions, development organizations, human-rights groups, and the press).

Obtains information from a variety of contacts and published and unpublished sources, and prepares fact-and opinion-based reports that both analyze current circumstances and events and predict future changes and events related to domestic political affairs, economic and business conditions and events, social issues, law and order issues, and the associated actors (including political parties, business leaders and organizations, other parts of civil society, and the people involved).

Assists Public Affairs Section in administration and expansion of public diplomacy programs in Greenland, to include alumni, youth, and other cultural programs, as well as academic, educational, and private sector exchanges. Assists in establishing and maintaining an American Corner.

Organizes trips and meetings for U.S. officers of Mission Denmark and official visitors traveling to Greenland; briefs them on political, economic, and social circumstances, events, and trends related to these meetings; and accompanies them to these meetings when requested.

Monitors Greenlandic media and provides interpretation to English of relevant Greenlandic media of potential interest to U.S. officers. Provides interpretation to Greenlandic from U.S. government content as directed. Provides oral translation to and from Danish, Greenlandic, and English in support of official U.S. visitors.

Skills and Abilities: Must be a self-starter, able to complete projects on time and with minimum supervision; excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to develop high-level contacts; skill in preparing timely and sophisticated political, economic, and cultural analysis; typing at 30 words-per-minute and advanced facility with standard software applications.

Qualifications and Evaluations

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years of prior work experience in practical Greenlandic or Danish politics, business or journalism in government, with a political party, academia, law firm, international business or press/journalism is required.

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in political science, business, journalism, humanities, history, or law is required.

LANGUAGE:Level IV (Speaking, Writing and Reading) in English, Level IV (Speaking, Writing and Reading) in Danish and Level IV (Speaking, Writing and Reading) in Greenlandic. “This may be tested”

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (five weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

All candidates under consideration will be required to pass medical and obtain and hold a Local Security Certification/Public Trust clearance.

All applicants must have the required work and/or residency permits or EU residence certificates to be eligible for consideration. If not a Danish citizen, a copy of the required work and/or residency permits or certificates must be forwarded together with the application.

Agency Benefits:

Locally Employed Staff, working for the U.S. Mission in Copenhagen, Denmark may receive a compensation package that may include pension, and other benefits. The HR Office assigns the pay plan at the time of the conditional offer letter.
