Commercial fishing with mobile bottom-contacting gear is one of the major anthropogenic activities affecting marine ecosystems. Short term impacts on the seabed include physical disturbance, resuspension of sediments, mortality of benthic fauna, and alteration of habitat structures, while long term impacts may include changes in community composition and function, and reductions in habitat complexity.
Assessment of the benthic effects and by-catch of fishing is a central component in ecosystem based fisheries management.
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD fellowship on metabolic engineering of yeast cell factories.
Synthetic biology enables us to create novel cell factories for the production of fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks. The development of efficient cell factories is however both slow and costly. This project focuses on developing an integrated methodology, where systems biology-level analysis, genome-scale metabolic modelling and synthetic biology are combined to accelerate the metabolic engineering of yeast cell factories.
The candidate will develop novel yeast cell factories for production of high-value chemicals from renewable feedstocks.
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about analytical chemistry, microbial fermentation, standard and sample preparation.
