The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Optimal Dispatch and Online Control of Integrated Energy Systems.
In order to realize the long term goal of renewables based energy systems, the synergy between electricity, heat and gas will have to be explored. The interactions among different energy sectors will provide more flexibility required by the future renewable energy system.
This PhD project will study the flexibility and ramping requirements of integrated energy systems. Optimal dispatch and online control algorithms will be developed for multi-time-scale operation of the integrated energy systems based on model predictive control.

The project focuses on obtaining a molecular understanding of the freeze-drying (lyophilization) process of protein formulations.
The challenge with these freeze-dried formulations is that proteins are exposed to an environment far from physiological conditions. The lyophilization is a complex process that generates stress to the structural integrity of proteins. This stress is caused by for instance changes in the physicochemical properties of the solution during the freeze-drying process (e.g. increased ionic strength, change in pH).
In connection with our newly granted research project ‘MIMIO – Microstructures, microbiota and oral delivery’ from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we are looking to fill two PhD positions.
In MIMIO, we intend to design, realize and characterize micrometer-sized containers for the oral administration of probiotics with the vision of using them, for example, in the treatment of colitis. The project is based on a close collaboration between DTU Nanotech and DTU Food, and activities cover areas such as design optimization, microfabrication and in vivo experiments.
Both PhD projects demand a large degree of cross-disciplinary thinking and handling of micrometer-sized devices. This involves filling microcontainers with microorganisms and drugs, spray coating or lamination of lids and the characterization of mechanisms of release using in vitro and in vivo settings.

Nanostructured 2D materials have fascinating electronic and optical properties. With the present project, our goal is to be able to fabricate and then combine different nanostructured 2D materials by using controlled stacking, exploiting van der Waals interactions for keeping the layers together.
A mind-boggling number of combination possibilities are possible, and the properties of the resulting stacks are expected to be just as varied.

We offer a PhD fellowship at Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering) at the Technical University of Denmark. The PhD project will be executed at the Bacterial Interactions and Evolution group in the Section for Microbial and Chemical Ecology.
We study microbial interactions using molecular microbiology and microscopy techniques combined with laboratory evolution. Our aim is to understand how the ecology of Bacilli is affected by interactions and adaptation, how Bacilli colonize the rhizosphere and compete with other microorganisms and how we can harvest this knowledge for biocontrol and production purposes.
A 3-year PhD scholarship is available from 1 April 2018 in the Automation group at DTU Electrical Engineering. The project Distributed and modular bio-inspired architecture for motor learning and control is a research project co-funded by the European project: the Human Brain Project (HBP).
In this particular research project we seek to elucidate the basic principles of motor learning and control based on different bio-inspired studies, among whom the cerebellar role in motor adaptation. The project aims at applying new learning and control architectures in order to achieve adaptability performance. The project deals with theoretical as well as experimental approaches.

Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an open PhD position (early-stage researcher) in the H2020 MSCA ITN RealVision project at DTU Fotonik.
The goal of the project is to encode light field image data for flexible access and processing. Light field video and imaging lead to very large amounts of data and coding is crucial to utilize the data efficiently. High-quality coding of light field data facilitating interactive, visually oriented applications will be developed.
The coding scheme will be based on modelling relations of subsets, e.g. close-by views and efficient coding of these. For modelling, advanced flow and motion estimation formulations will be established for subsets of the data.

DTU Electrical Engineering seeks qualified and talented candidates for a vacant PhD position in Counteraction Planning based on Multilevel Flow Modelling.
The purpose of the project is to extend the current reasoning platform with algorithms to generate action plans for the operator based on on-line information about causes and consequences of plant disturbances. The reasoning system will be applied for operator decision support in fault and disturbance management.
On-line decision support is currently supported in industrial plants by procedures or operating manuals. These procedures and operating instructions are predefined and based on previous operational experience and are often incomplete or too generic.
The overall aim of the project is to develop reasoning algorithms for counteraction planning based on Multilevel Flow Modelling.
A PhD fellowship is available at Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering) at the Technical University of Denmark. The position will be placed in the Enzyme and Protein Chemistry group in the section of Protein Science and Signaling Biology with about 30 staff members.
The project work for this position includes: production of recombinant b-lactoglobulin and analysis of sites interacting with designed alginate oligosaccharides using NMR; cross-linking of b-lactoglobulin as well as whey protein mixture and identification of cross-linked amino acid residues using mass spectrometry; evaluation by in vitro digestion using articificial gastrointestinal tract systems of cross-linked protein (whey protein mixtures) in complex with alginate for validation of functional effects.
The Center for Magnetic Resonance at DTU’s Department of Electrical Engineering (DTU Elektro) would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting spring 2018.
The project is co-funded by the Danish Cancer Society and is part of a collaborative project that aims to improve radiotherapy of patients suffering from secondary tumours in the brain.
Treatment will be guided by novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. MRI forms images of the anatomy and physiological processes in the body and is widely used in radiology and with growing number of applications in oncology.
A 3-year PhD position is available at the Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) Section at DTU Physics. The section works with magnetically confined plasmas from a theoretical and experimental point of view with the focus on making fusion energy a commercially attractive energy source. The section is internationally recognized for its work with edge plasma turbulence and its work in the field of microwave scattering.
The planned research deals with increasing the heating efficiency of plasmas, a key element in realizing fusion energy on earth. The research is a part of a bigger focus area and you will be a part of a growing research team funded by the VILLUM young investigator programme with fellow PhD students and post docs.
