CEO for the Danish National Research Foundation

The Danish National Research Foundation is seeking an experienced and ambitious CEO with strong leadership skills to head the Foundation’s operating activities and set and reach long-term strategic goals in close collaboration with the Foundation’s board and secretariat. The CEO will have a central role in promoting outstanding Danish research at a high international level.

The position

The CEO heads a dedicated and professional secretariat and leads the development of the administrative processes. Key tasks include serving and implementing decisions of the board, managing application processes, and ensuring close contact with the foundation’s grant holders, including participation in annual follow-up meetings with the centers. Also, in collaboration with the CFO, the CEO is responsible for the foundation’s finances.

The CEO acts as an ambassador for the foundation and has a central role in the contact with the foundation’s key stakeholders. Thus, in close coordination with the board, the CEO represents the foundation externally, and a main task is to further develop the working relationships with members of the research community based on the vision, purpose and values of the foundation. The position not only offers unique insight into the Danish research environment, but also offers a strong basis for close cooperation with the many stakeholders throughout the research environment.

Furthermore, the CEO position entails continued analyses and evaluations of the foundation's strategy and grant initiatives with a view towards adjustments.

Desirable qualifications include the following:

  • strong leadership, strategic, and visionary skills
  • a solid research management background
  • research experience
  • excellent communication skills in Danish and English
  • experience with evaluation of research applications
  • experience with international evaluations of research organizations or funding bodies
  • a well-developed network within the public and private research sectors
  • knowledge of the research system in Denmark and credibility within the research community
  • understanding of good governance and commitment to high integrity
  • experience with leading an organization in a reliable and effective manner
  • the ability to carry a CEO’s responsibility regarding the foundation’s finances in cooperation with the CFO

Salary and Terms of Employment

The CEO reports to the foundation’s board, which consists of a chair, a vice chair, and seven board members. The board is appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Science following recommendations from selected bodies.

The position is to be filled for a period of six years with the possibility of extension. The expected start date is January 1, 2025.

The salary is to be set by negotiation, considering the salaries of corresponding public sector positions.
